About this training
The Introduction to Arboriculture short course employs lecture and some hands-on instruction while covering the contents of the ISA Arborist Certification Study Guide, 4th Edition 2022. Dr. Dozier’s approach to this course is to introduce basic concepts and then build on these facts towards more complex understanding.
Between classes, participants are encouraged to review course materials (study) and assimilate the information covered during previous lectures. The residential nature of the course greatly enhances interaction and learning among course participants and allows more interaction time with the instructors. In addition to daily class times, we will offer review/study activities most evenings (upon request) to facilitate comprehension and retention.

Arrival:
You are encouraged to arrive Sunday afternoon or evening to settle in. Hyw 10 is poorly lit and it is easy to miss the turn onto Dollar Rd and then Lee Memorial Rd after sunset.
Dinner is on your own that evening, but there are restaurants in Franklinton or Bogalousa. If you have dietary restrictions, please let us know, and we will try to accommodate. You may also bring any special items you need.
Included in your registration:
Study Materials: Each student will receive a copy of ISA Arborist Certification Study Guide, 4th Edition 2022, lists of online resources to assist in learning the information presented, plus other learning and reference materials. Materials will be distributed on the first day of class.
Food and lodging: meals beginning with breakfast on Monday. We strongly encourage you to stay at the camp because the daily sessions are long and it will give you the opportunity for concentrated study during evening hours. Men and women will be housed in separate dormitories. Men are in the main camp building, and women across the road.
What to bring:
- Toiletries, soap, shampoo and personal medications
- Bedding (sleeping bag/blanket & sheets, pillow; beds are twin size bunks)
- Bath towel(s)
- Field clothing (trousers, sturdy shoes, socks, long sleeves).
- Specialty food items. Meals are good, but basic, so if you need special items, feel free to bring your own.
- Laundry soap – there is a washer and dryer available.
- Ear plugs!!
- Notepad
- If you have your own personal hotspot, bring that
- Personal device chargers
- A great attitude!
