Duct and Envelope Testing (DET) Training and Certification

Course Information:

Become a certified Duct and Envelope Tightness (DET) Verifier qualified to perform the diagnostic testing required for new homes by the current residential energy codes and report results for code compliance. LaHouse Resource Center is an authorized provider of the Southface Energy Institute training, exam and certification.

After successful completion of this course, you will be able to measure the total leakage of a building envelope and duct system, total leakage to outside, and evaluate the results as measured against the code. Course content includes:

  • Basic building science concepts of air infiltration and building envelope
  • Requirements of the current IRC energy chapter.
  • Protocols for blower door and duct leakage testing and reporting.
  • Calculations for ACH50 and percent duct leakage
  • Study materials for successfully completing the written and in-field DET Verifier certification exams

  • DET training handbook
  • Required Certification Exams (field and written)
  • DET Verifier Certificate (with passing score on both exams)
  • Inclusion on the official state registry of DET certified contractors (with passing score)

Professionals seeking certification to perform mandated envelope and duct testing: building inspectors, HVAC contractors, insulators, energy efficiency contractors and service providers, quality assurance construction managers. Course also covers essential air sealing techniques and building envelope fundamentals.

Certification: Duct and Envelope Tightness (DET) Verifier Certificate (NOTE: You must receive a passing score on both exams

for Southface designation as a DET Verifier.)

Prerequisites and Class Supplies:
Online Pre-class Tutorials: Basics of Building Science ,online 1-hour modules
Supplies: Bring a calculator for the written and field exams.

Continuing Education units: This seminar is pre-approved education hours for Louisiana residential contractors (request LSLBC form) and                            La. Home Inspectors (full credit through LSBHI). This course is approved for 6 BPI CEU's; provide your BPI number to the instructor if you need these credits.  A LaHouse Resource Center certificate of completion will be issued to attendees. 

Cost: $650 registration fee (includes written and field exams) 

Refund Policy: There are no refunds.  Class dates can be changed once for a fee of $20.                                                       

Class size is limited. Payment must be received and processed prior to the start of class.

This class is not held in the summers due to the extreme temperatures.
